The Flying Princess

Hello my friends, my name is Angelica del Carmen and I am seven and a half years old.  You can call me Akika, my nickname  (that's how I pronounced my name when I was a baby).

I am in my room, lying on my bed, looking through the window at how the wind moves the plants my mom grew, so that I could see a beautiful green curtain with yellow and white flowers.

I am happy as today I started to write on this beautiful purple  notebook that I got a few days ago.  Today I am going to write my first story!  I am so excited ...!  I hope to finish it before my parents tell me to go to bed; tomorrow we have to wake up early to go to school.  I also hope that you will like my story, I think it's going to come out beautiful, so I wish ...

Before anything else, let me tell you a little bit about myself,  I am in second grade, in a near-by school.   I have a nice and funny teacher who wanted to be a fire fighter but had an accident when he was young.  I am a good student, I behave well, I sometimes fight, always with my older brother, who bothers me when he is bored, but we love each other.

I have allergies, that's why I don't have a dog or a cat, but I do have two stuffed animals, a bear -white as the snow- and a brown puppy.

Ups ...!  I almost forgot, I also have a beautiful red fish called 'Fishie', it's true, she is looking at me now from her fishbowl.

-Hi Fishie!  Today I am going to write my first story!

I am going to name my first story 'The Flying Princess', it is the tale of an image I drew yesterday at the school play yard, while I was waiting for my mom to pick me up; she is never late, I'm glad she was though, and I had the idea to draw.

Beside the fish, I have a little red and pink bird called Rosalin.  Well, I draw Rosalin happily flying over the skies of the world, with me, of course.  Always together.

Attention, this is the beginning of the story:

At nights, when my brother and parents are asleep, I climb to the top of the house through the flower curtain with Rosalin in the pocket of my pyjama.  Carefully I sit down over the roof tiles, take out my little bird from my pocket, and comfortably look at the stars far away who play amongst each other who shines the most.

-That one Rosalin!  -I tell excited showing a bright star.

-No.  That one!  -I correct myself, discovering an even brighter star.

The neighborhood is asleep, the city dreams, the cats yawn, the shadows play with the night hours.  I whisper Rosalin a magic word and my bird becomes one hundred times bigger so that I can ride her and travel the skies of the world.

Can you picture Rosalin a hundred times bigger?  That's the way she looks:  enormous!  And of course, so beautiful that I cannot help but to sigh in disbelief.  It is the biggest and most beautiful bird in the entire planet!

And naturally, I become a Princess.  Why not?  All the girls dream of becoming a princess.  In the roof of my house, beside my giant and tender Rosalin, with the stars as friends and witnesses, I become Princess Angelica del Carmen of all the skies and the oceans of the planet Earth!   How about that ...!  Akika a Princess ...

My crown is not made of gold or diamonds, but of fresh white and yellow flowers from my own garden, the one my mom attentively takes cares of.  What else can I ask for?  I have everything ...

Rosalin becomes very happy when she sees her own shadow over the clouds, the moon shining in a sky filled with stars who are astonished to hear my laughter and bewitched contemplating Rosalin leaving a pink trail of feathers that make them tickle.

Happily we fly over snow mountain peaks, magic castles, town and cities of all sizes, lakes, forests, jungles, oceans.  We travel the world in a starry night, I strongly hugged Rosalin, both tireless and hypnotized by the beauty of our planet.

Do you know there are five continents?  I learned that in my geography class, it's my favorite subject. I have seen them all from the skies, I'm going to tell you their names in alphabetical order (that way it's easier to remember): Africa, America, Antartica, Europe and Oceania.

We are now flying over the North Pole, all you see is white, covered by snow; my stuffed animal, the bear, must be from this cold region.  Our planet is divided by the Ecuator line in two hemispheres, the north and the south.  Before we return home I will show you the South Pole.

Rosalin loves lighthouses, every time she sees one in the horizon we get so close to it we can almost touch it.  I laugh happily, I also love lighthouses!

-Look, Mount Everest is so impressive!  -It is the highest peak in our planet, located south of Asia, between China and India, in the Himalayas region.

When the first sunrays appear by the Wall of China (the Wall of China is so large it could circle the Earth), Rosalin and I watch them over from the Sahara Desert in Africa, it is the biggest dessert of all, there my bird's shadow is the longest.

-Look Rosalin!  How beautiful ...!  The pyramids of Egypt!  The moon makes them shine as if made of gold sand.  Who could imagine that the pyramids were built so many thousands of years ago ...!

-It is time to go back ... - I whisper in Rosalin's ear after having followed the route of the Nile River, which is the longest river in our planet.

The Nile river is in Africa, where there are endless species of all kinds of animals; one of my dreams is to go there on safari, with my parents and my brother.  Can you imagine that?  That would certainly be a fun adventure!

Also in Africa we find the Victoria waterfalls, the most spectacular water curtain that you could ever dream of!  I bet you would love this place, specially the huge rainbow!  If I could have a collection of anything, it would be of rainbows ...

Rosalin obeys the wind allowing it to take us to our destiny, only at that moment you don't hear the wings breaking through the winds, you don't hear anything, is the most compelling silence, only the stars sigh.  Feeling the fresh wind in our faces, we smile with pleasure, my arms open as wings, my eyes closed.

-I am happy ...!  I scream to the children of the world to share with them my joy.  I wish we could all fly together ... we would need thousands of birds that would need to become a hundred times bigger each!  Astonished, the stars and the moon would faint at the sight and the sound of our army of laughter, like a giant and noisy rattle capable of transforming all the people of the world.

-It's the South Pole!  Do you see it?  It is also covered by snow.  We will soon see the Amazon jungle, the largest ecosystem in the planet.  The Amazon jungle is a true treasure of animals and plants and we need to protect it, right Rosalin?

Rosalin takes us over the ruins of Machu Pichu, in Peru, where I sigh in disbelief at the beauty and magic of the place.  I am sure my mom would love it, I hope one day we can all visit this beautiful wonder of the world.

-Now is the time Rosalin, let's go home, the sunrays are beginning to show- I tell her with sadness, it's so beautiful to travel the world ...our planet is so stunning ...

-There is our home!  -The city is starting to awaken.

Rosalin flies slow and silently, landing cautiously over the roof of our house, I whisper the magic word and she becomes one hundred times smaller.  Rosalin fits in my hand, I kiss her tender little red head and carefully put her in the pocket of my pyjama.

With care I go down the curtain of flowers my mom planted so that it would embellish my childhood, and in my room I put Rosalin in her cage, with the door open as I know she would not escape (she waits, as I do, the next flying adventure) I lay down on my bed closing my eyes as my smile fades away.

That's how my first story ends, the Flying Princess.  Did you like it?

I hope so ...

Until the next time, my dear friends!
